"Because most of the ways we see ourselves and other people were learned."

Some I learned from instruction, some I learned from experience. When I begin to suspect that I have learned something false, my tendencies are to get angry, if I learned it because a trusted source told me that it was true, or ashamed, if I drew an incorrect conclusion based on non-representative evidence. Changing myself requires me to work through these immediate emotional reactions to having realized that I have been wrong.
